Erich Grünert founded the Grünert company in Saxonia in 1956. The family had to flee political turmoil in the GDR in 1960 but soon began building instruments again near Landsberg, Bavaria. In 1970 the company moved to their own workshop in Penzberg, where Erich’s son Horst is still producing instruments today.
We believe that this stunning 3/4 size double bass was made by in the ’80s. Entirely carved by hand, this lovingly crafted double bass is gamba cornered for sleek aesthetics and sounds fantastic either bowed or plucked. It has picked up several cracks over the years (sadly common in solid top instruments of this size) but they have all been professionally repaired to a very high standard and will not deteriorate over time if taken care of. We have shown these in the closeups. There are also a number of small cracks and chips under the bridge and some small chips on the back of the body. These are all cosmetic and do not affect tone or playability.
Owing to this instrument’s rather large size, we are unable to offer postage or delivery so please call in to try it out between 10-5 Tuesday to Saturday, or check out now using our secure online shop (linked below) to reserve it for collection.
