Zoom are masters of the multi-fx unit and the G3X covers a lot of ground in a fun and easy-to-use way. It’s very fully featured so prepare yourself for an infodump –
There are 94 effects and 22 amp and cabinet models in Zoom’s G3X and it’s ready to play right out of the box with the 100 presets. There are 3 displays to show you the selected effects, each with its own footswitch and control knob, to make programming a breeze. There’s an onboard chromatic tuner (including open and drop tunings), a USB audio interface – even a drum machine and looper. What an outrageous bang-to-buck ratio!
The effects include compressors, noise gates, filters, equalizers, and wah effects, as well as boosters, overdrives, fuzzes, phasers and flangers, plus chorus, pitch shift, tremolo, vibrato, even out-there ring modulation. You’ll also find 20 delays (including tape delay simulators) and natural-sounding reverbs, including rooms, halls, arenas, plates, and crucially springs.
There are simulations of both classic and contemporary pedals such as the MXR Dynacomp and Distortion+, Moog MF-101, Ibanez TS808 Tubescreamer, Marshall Guv’nor, Fuzz Face, Big Muff, Pro Co Rat, ADA Flanger, and Boss OD-1, DS-1, Metal Face, and CE-1 Chorus. This is also packaged with Zoom’s Noise Reduction (ZNR) algorithm and ExtremeDS, which offers the most powerful gain of any distortion effect in the world!
There’s 22 amp models, both vintage and modern tube and solid-state amplifiers from manufacturers like Fender, Marshall, Matchless, Mesa Boogie, Hiwatt, Orange, Two Rock, Diezel, and ENGL, each with its own distinct cabinet modeling that can be used to further alter the tonal quality. You can pair any amp to any cabinet, and they won’t set on fire.
Normal or active guitars are welcomed. Outputs are mono or stereo, with additional balanced XLR output jacks to connect to headphones, mixing desks or line-level devices. You can even match the output of a given amp/cabinet model to the actual setup you’re playing through – options include line, combos, stacks etc.
If that’s not enough it’s a 2 in, 2 out recording interface for your Mac or PC, and you can download Zoom’s Edit & Share software to edit and share patches. One hundred of your own patches can be saved. It can be powered by 4 AA batteries – either alkaline or NiMH, or you can use the supplied AC adapter.
