Furch have long been one of our favourite builders of acoustic guitars. The company was founded by Frantisek Furch who began building instruments in communist ’70s Czechoslovakia. As his instruments found fame he was forced to hide his business in all sorts of elaborate ways, selling around 1000 custom built instruments throughout the 1980s. With the fall of communism in 1989, Furch exploded onto the global scene and their instruments have been widely heralded ever since.
This gorgeous Furch G23CR was made in 2011 and is an exquisite example of everything that makes Furch instruments stand out from the crowd. It uses all solid tonewoods, with an American red cedar top and Indian rosewood back and sides. The neck is Honduran mahogany with a beautifully inlaid ebony fretboard. It has a very comfortable tapered V profile. This feels pleasantly solid under the hands for big root position chords and nice and slim for soloing at the higher frets. These are readily accessible thanks to the cutaway. The body is beautifully decorated with abalone rosette inlay and stylish striped binding. There’s also a transparent pickguard to prevent damage to the solid top. The bridge pins made from a very tasteful faux tortoise-shell (with Paua abalone decoration) which is also used for the tuning pegs, alongside gold plated, 100% reliable Schaller tuners.
Tonally this guitar is truly superb, with a rich and resonant bottom end, sweet, slightly scooped mids and crystal clear treble. This is thanks in part to Furch’s unique tapered X bracing design. The neck has also benefitted from Furch’s ingenious designs, using a proprietary two way truss rod for easy adjustability and total action control. The outstanding acoustic tone can also be accurately amplified thanks to the warm and responsive Fishman Rare Earth pickup which has been very neatly installed by a previous owner. The 1/4″ jack output is fitted at the bottom of the guitar and doubles as a strap pin. All in all this is a truly superbly well balanced guitar which can tackle everything from finger picking to big strumming with ease in spite of its slim body and cutaway and comes with the added bonus of being very resistant to feedback!
Cosmetically this electro-acoustic guitar is in great condition, apart from some small scratches below and to the right of the soundhole (see front closeup) and some very minor scratches to the headstock. There is next to no fret wear apart from a tiny indentation on the first fret of the B string. It also comes with a Furch hard case to protect it from damage. This guitar will not be here for long so check out now to arrange affordable postage or call in to Finale Guitar between 10-5 any day except Wednesday to take it for a test drive- you won’t regret it!
